Book2MyKids "Content of the Week"

This week's content comes from the Chapter on "Honesty & Integrity"

"It is said that your character is defined by how you act when no one is looking. In other words, do you pick up your litter when no one sees you drop it? When you get home and discover that the clerk gave you too much change, do you go back to the store and give back the extra money? If yes, you have good character.
It is also important to know that people are judging your character every minute of every day. So we encourage you to exhibit good character at all times. Good character will lead to success in your marriage, friendships, and career. Guard your character as one of your most prized possessions.

So what is good character? Character consists of many traits, including honesty, integrity, trustworthiness, truthfulness, reliability, loyalty, and unselfishness. Let me help you by explaining each trait. And when in doubt, do what Jesus Christ would do (read the Bible if you are not sure).

Honesty - Live and compete honorably. Do not cheat, steal or engage in any other dishonest conduct. Plagiarism and cheating are not acceptable. The Bible says "The Lord hates cheating and delights in honesty." Proverbs 11:1

Integrity - Live up to high ideals of ethics and always pursue victory with honor and for the glory of Jesus Christ. Do what is right even when it is unpopular or personally costly. The Bible says "The integrity of the upright will guide them, but the crookedness of the treacherous will destroy them." Proverbs 11:3

Trustworthiness - Be worthy of trust in all you do. The Bible says "Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much." Luke 16:10-11

Truthfulness - Tell the truth, always. The Bible says "The Lord detests lying lips, but He delights in men who are truthful." Proverbs 12:22 "Lies will get any man into trouble, but honesty is its own defense. Telling the truth gives a man great satisfaction and hard work returns many blessings to him." Proverbs 12:13-14 "Telling lies about someone is as harmful as hitting him with an ax, or wounding him with a sword, or shooting him with a sharp arrow." Proverbs 25:18

Reliability - Fulfill commitments. Do what you say you will do. Be on time. The Bible says "Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed." Proverbs 16:3

Loyalty - Be loyal to God, your family, your friends, your school, your teammates and your employer. Always be there to help others. The Bible says "Never let loyalty and kindness get away from you! Wear them like a necklace; write them deep within your heart." Proverbs 3:3

Unselfishness - Always think: Christ first, others second, you last. Be unselfish. Be giving to others. Put others above your personal glory. The Bible says "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves." Philippians 2:3 "For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice." James 3:16

Always demonstrate good character! And remember, you not only represent yourself, but you represent God, Jesus Christ, and your family."
